Umicore Galvanotechnik GmbH in Schwaebisch Gmuend can look back on 120 years of company history. In 1888 the gold and silver refinery Dr. Walter & Schmitt was founded. Degussa AG, Frankfurt am Main, takes over in 1957 the refinery Dr. Walter & Schmitt. Since 1970 the company concentrates its activities emphasizing „precious metal plating“ in Schwaebisch Gmuend. In 1999 was the transfer of business shares to Allgemeine Gold- und Silberscheideanstalt AG , Pforzheim. As their fully owned subsidiary company we are part of the Umicore group which is located in Brussels, Belgium. Umicore Electroplating operates at a location which is ideally suited to conduct business in the field of surface finishing. Our company is based in Schwaebisch Gmuend (Baden-Wuerttemberg) in close vicinity to the Fachschulen fuer Galvano- und Leiterplattentechnik (Electroplating & PCB Technology), to the Zentrum fuer Oberflaechentechnik Schwaebisch Gmuend e. V. (Z.O.G.) (Surface Technology Center) also to the European Academy for Surface Technology (EAST), as well as the Forschungsinstitut Edelmetalle & Metallchemie (FEM) (Research Institute for Precious Metals and Metals Chemistry) and universities of the region. This includes the technical university Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft (HTW), Aalen. Our lively exchange with these institutions is a prerequisite for a strong alliance between research and operational business. Here, tradition converges with modernity, experience meets innovation. Our customers benefit from this synergy, because expert knowledge, gained over decades, combined with the latest research results offer the best foundation for customized solutions.
