Umicore Galvanotechnik GmbH in Schwaebisch Gmuend can look back on 120 years of company history. In 1888 the gold and silver refinery Dr. Walter & Schmitt was founded. Degussa AG, Frankfurt am Main, takes over in 1957 the refinery Dr. Walter & Schmitt. Since 1970 the company concentrates its activities emphasizing „precious metal plating“ in Schwaebisch Gmuend. In 1999 was the transfer of business shares to Allgemeine Gold- und Silberscheideanstalt AG , Pforzheim. As their fully owned subsidiary company we are part of the Umicore group which is located in Brussels, Belgium.

Umicore Electroplating operates at a location which is ideally suited to conduct business in the field of surface finishing.
Our company is based in Schwaebisch Gmuend (Baden-Wuerttemberg) in close vicinity to the Fachschulen fuer Galvano- und Leiterplattentechnik (Electroplating & PCB Technology), to the Zentrum fuer Oberflaechentechnik Schwaebisch Gmuend e. V. (Z.O.G.) (Surface Technology Center) also to the European Academy for Surface Technology (EAST), as well as the Forschungsinstitut Edelmetalle & Metallchemie (FEM) (Research Institute for Precious Metals and Metals Chemistry) and universities of the region. This includes the technical university Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft (HTW), Aalen.
